Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, can occur almost anywhere on the skin including the hands. Scientifically, it is also known as dyshidrosis.
Characteristics of atopic dermatitis of the hands are itchy, red bumps that can appear on the sides of the fingers and on the back of the palms.
Blisters may also occur, which worsen with aggravated itching and may increase the risk of infection.
The cause for this form of atopic dermatitis is unknown, but it is generally assumed to be the result of an allergic or immune response from the body.
People should watch out for reactions from certain allergens and even metals, such a nickel and cobalt.
Treatments for atopic dermatitis of the hands can be as simple as; remembering to moisturize properly, to being prescribed a topical ointment or cream by a doctor.
Generally, it is advised to start off with at-home treatments and if they have no effect on a person’s atopic dermatitis then a person is advised to try over-the-counter medications.
Over-the-counter medications can be purchased without a prescription and will help to reduce inflammation and itchiness associated with atopic dermatitis on the hands.
A person may also use an antihistamine, or allergy medicine, which will also reduce symptoms but are advised that most of these types of treatment may cause drowsiness.
If none of the previously mentioned treatments are having a significant effect on atopic dermatitis then a person should see his or her doctor, or healthcare provider. Together with a physician, a person can decide which treatment will be the appropriate choice for the type of atopic eczema that person is dealing with.
Prescribed medications include topical ointments and creams that contain corticosteroids and hydrocortisone.
There is no treatment currently available that will permanently get rid of any atopic dermatitis.
