Atopic dermatitis is a skin condition that is usually caused by an allergic reaction or is a hereditary condition.
Most of the time treatment options for atopic dermatitis can be obtained from your doctor, at a drugstore, and can even be available to do at your home.
There is a very small chance that you would have to visit a hospital as a result of your atopic dermatitis unless there is an unusually large reaction that has led to an infection.
One of the ways to treat atopic dermatitis is to take short lukewarm baths and moisturize immediately after. It is advised that you use a rich, unscented moisturizer and apply it while the skin is still damp.
At-home treatments can also be as simple as wearing clothing items that are made of cotton, so they don’t further irritate your skin. Remember to also use a gentle detergent on your clothes and use cleansers or face/body products that are meant for sensitive skin. Adjusting your diet may also help, as the cause of your atopic dermatitis may also be a type of food allergy.
Topical steroids and ointments may also be used as treatment options for atopic dermatitis.
Most topical medications will contain hydrocortisone, but stronger steroid treatments may contain or betamethasone valerate.
You can also be prescribed products that contain immunomodulators, or calcineurin inhibitors. These products usually have a slight burning sensation during the first two to three days of use, but will eventually go away.
Immunomodulators, such as tacrolimus and pimecrolimus, are available in topical creams. Tacrolimus is available in a 0.1% strength that is meant for adults and a 0.03% strength for children, while pimecrolimus is available at a 1% strength.
These treatments are also usually more expensive than products with hydrocortisone or corticosteroids.
For the best results, it is advised that you read and follow the directions provided with the medication you are using.
